The Most Frequently Asked Questions We Receive.
How much does an abortion cost?

Abortion prices vary from the first and second trimesters. Early option pill is $750, and 1st-trimester abortion starts at $1000. The initial ultrasound and visit cost of $100 is applied toward the cost of the abortion.

Does insurance cover the cost of an abortion?

Insurance does NOT cover abortion services but may pay for blood type, cultures, and Pap smear labs. Abortion usually covers contraceptive options. Contact us, and we'll help you identify your best options.

Do I need permission to have an abortion?

Arizona law requires women under 18 years old to have parental permission to terminate an unplanned pregnancy. Arizona law requires all women to undergo a 24-hour consent/notification before obtaining an abortion. A doctor must conduct this. Please call us for details on obtaining parental consent or judicial bypass.

Will an abortion prevent me from getting pregnant later on?

Abortion performed by an experienced physician has not been shown to affect future fertility. If you do not use contraception, you could become pregnant again in as little as 2-3 weeks.

Who will perform my abortion?

Dr. Yunis, a private, licensed, practicing OB/GYN doctor, will perform your procedure in his private GYN office.

What if I am a minor (less than 18 years old)?

Doctor Yunis specializes in treating minors/pediatric gynecology patients. Arizona law requires that a minor seeking an abortion must have the consent of a parent or guardian. The law only requires one of your parents to give consent. On the day you come in, you and your parent or guardian must come to our clinic together so that we may obtain legal consent. Both you and your parent must bring a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or a passport. If you do not have a government-issued photo ID, you must bring an original copy of your birth certificate. If you and your parent have different last names or addresses, we need to see documents explaining this (such as a marriage license or divorce decree.) When you call for your appointment, our staff can assist you in determining what documents are needed.

Judicial Bypass
If you feel that you cannot obtain the consent of one of your parents to have an abortion, you may attempt to obtain a court order allowing you to have the abortion without parental consent. Our staff can assist you with this process. All of the forms required for this process are available in our office.

Is it painful?

You may feel mild-moderate cramping during the procedure. We use intravenous (IV) "Twilight sleep" sedation for all our patients who desire it. As a result, many patients have little/no recollection /memory of the procedure. The doctor will administer a local block for patients who choose not to be sedated, and we will give a potent non-steroidal (often best for cramping).

How will I feel after the procedure?

You can go back to school or work the next day. The medications and the stress may tire you, but minimal physical effects will remain within 1-2 hours after the procedure. Morning sickness tends to resolve within an hour or two. Light bleeding (like the last day of your period) and spotting can occur for a few days. Some women who work night shifts even choose to return to work the same evening. Most patients who travel from states where abortion is illegal, such as Texas and Louisiana, get on a plane home that afternoon/evening. You can even drive yourself home if you undergo the procedure without sedation or narcotics. Approximately 10% of patients choose the "no meds" option. You must avoid intercourse or submersion (bathtub, pool) for two weeks, but you can shower as soon/whenever you'd like.

How long will I be in the office?

You will be in the office for 2-3 hours on the day of state-mandated 24-hour informed consent and notification. This time is REQUIRED For all procedures ("day one.”) You will be in the office for approximately 2-3 hours on the day of your surgical abortion ("day two.”) You will need a ride home this day. We will call your ride/Uber/Lyft when you are ready to go home. Rides can wait in the waiting room, but we strongly recommend waiting for a call-back. For Medical abortions, day two is approximately 30-45 minutes. There is a REQUIRED follow-up visit for all medical abortions two weeks later. This appointment will be scheduled on the day of your abortion pill (day two.) The follow-up appointment should take about 30 minutes.

Will there be protestors?

As the saying goes, "Stupid is as stupid does." Sometimes, protesters outside our facility feel they have the right to tell you what to do with your life and body. Of course, they are wrong. Protestors are not allowed on our private property, and there is also an ordinance in Phoenix called the "bubble rule," which states that they may not come within 8 feet of you or your property (vehicle) without your permission.

Therefore, you should not need to have any direct contact with them. We have side entrances to the clinic (check Google Maps) where you can enter without encountering one of these vile, hideous creatures. You should not talk to, engage with, or acknowledge these pitiful excuses for humans. Security and Clinic Escorts may be present to assist you in getting to the office with minimal distractions. We can give you numbers for the AZ Attorney General, Phoenix Police, and FBI to file formal complaints if these oxygen wasters violate your rights.

I read that abortion is illegal in Arizona; what are the current laws?

State of Arizona Consent
The State of Arizona requires that women having an abortion have a consultation with the doctor at least 24 hours before the procedure. The State requires us to give you specific information at that consultation. The State requires the doctor to provide this information to you in person. This means that you will need to make two visits to our office, the first to receive the State-required information, at which time an ultrasound and pregnancy test will be performed to establish the age of the pregnancy, and a second visit (which can be the very next day) for your abortion procedure or administration of the early option pill. This visit will take from 2-3 hours. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please understand that this process is required by State law, and the way we must schedule appointments to have appointments immediately available to anyone who desires the service requires this.

Abortions Are Legal in Arizona Up to 14 weeks and six days of pregnancy. In Arizona, it is no longer legal for a doctor to perform an abortion after 14 weeks and six days of pregnancy. Since the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, each State has laws regulating abortion. If your ultrasound shows you are 15 weeks or older, we can refer you to an out-of-state clinic. The closest place for most Arizona women to obtain an abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy is the Birth Control Care Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. You may also call them at 702-733-7889

Abortions for "Fetal Genetic Abnormalities" Are Banned in Arizona
In Arizona, it is illegal for a doctor to perform an abortion if they know that a woman is seeking an abortion only because of a genetic abnormality with the fetus unless the abnormality is so severe that the baby could not survive after birth. It is also illegal to perform an abortion based on the sex of the fetus. We can refer you to an out-of-state clinic. Abortions are available at the Birth Control Care Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. We can refer you.

How much does it cost to have a surgical abortion?

We understand the crazy high and rising medical care prices are a big patient concern. Because we are the strongest advocates for a woman’s right to choose when and if to have a family, we want to keep abortion as affordable and safe as possible. The cost of the surgical abortion procedure starts at $900 through twelve weeks. There can be small additional costs for blood tests and Rhogam (which are performed/given only if absolutely necessary.) We will NEVER nickel-and-dime you. All major credit cards are accepted.

How early/late can I have an abortion?

Currently, abortion is legal in Arizona through 15 weeks. Our gynecologist can perform procedures as early as five weeks, so there is no need to wait until six or seven weeks for an abortion or to take the early option pill because you can’t wait. We can even refer you to a sister out-of-state facility if you are too far along.

I am coming from out of state. How long do I have to stay?

We welcome all out-of-state patients. We know that travel and lodging arrangements are complex and expensive. We will work around your schedule within the confines of AZ law (24-hour consent.) We will perform your abortion procedure the first thing in the morning so that you can be back on a plane home the same day as your procedure and not worry about taking pills at home, staying longer, or worrying that the pill might fail in a state that does not respect women’s rights and where abortion may be illegal.

What if I change my mind, or I’m still not sure?

If you are less than 15 weeks along, there is NEVER a rush to decide. No one will EVER judge, pressure, or rush you into what is an irreversible, permanent decision! Our doctor is an obstetrician who has performed thousands of the highest-risk deliveries and will provide you with an accurate due date and can provide early prenatal care or advice and refer you for complete prenatal care if that is YOUR decision.
